Thomas Carlye once said: Cease to struggle and you cease to live. Well, I couldn't agree more to this saying. If life is a trip to success, then hard-working will be the only true way to it.
However, instead of struggling for people's own dreams, recently, a lot of people are struggling with 996 work schedule. And what really freaks people out is that numerous people can't differentiate the monstrous work schedules from hard-working. Not only do they confuse them as one but also they boast about the benefits of 996 work schedules, which is totally ridiculous and goes far beyond the morality rule.
But we have to admit that the 996 work schedule actually has a long history and exists in almost every kind of profession. Yet interestingly, when we talk about this torturing work schedule, we can't help connecting it with Internet companies and it does seem that Internet companies are also the most concentrated area of this schedule. How does this happen?
Frankly speaking, the fact that this "overtime culture" is mostly popular with Internet companies doesn't really shock me. Due to the very unpredictable Internet market, it is somehow understandable for these companies' bosses to set schedules like 996. Internet is changing at an incalculable speed . The moment you take a nap and your company could go to bankruptcy, and that's not exaggeration. The competition is so harsh that they have to do what they are capable of to survive. But should that be the excuse of overtime work? Apparently, it shouldn't. In no way should employers exploit employees' blood and sweat. Just as The People's Daily has just claimed: Advocating hard-working does not equal to compulsory 996 schedule. And we can't find those staff guilty just because they are against this schedule, let alone labeling them as loafers.
To be fair, the 996 work schedule in most Internet companies is not the most tiresome, since there are other professions that requires more work intensity. Take my beloved teacher as an example. She arrives at school earlier than 8 A.M.to oversee students' morning reading and leaves school no sooner than 10 P.M. only to coach us while we are at evening's self-study. Holidays and weekends are luxurious to her since she has to correct our papers and homework. But she can stick to it for more than thirty years just because she loves it deeply.
In my opinion, for those who are struggling in 996 work schedule, they should have a clear assessment of themselves. For starters, it is enthusiasm that drives us to work full-heartedly, so what we need to do is not whining about all the work we have to do but to figure out what kind of work we truly love and fit. In addition, if you're not sure about what you will do, it's just that you are not fond of the company or can’t stand the liability given to you. It's no shame for you to do job-hopping since it's already 2019. And don't be afraid of taking up weapons of lawsuit when necessary.
As for me, I am always willing to take a job that requires 996 work schedule undoubtedly as long as I am suitable for and admires my job. There's a famous line in an Indian movie which says: It is hard to imagine that Mike Tyson's father forces him to stand in front of a microphone and Michael Jackson fights in an arena. To love my future job, view it not as a tool to make money or a method of making a living but fuel to my life, a stimulant that could pump adrenaline through my veins. So I can take it no matter it's 996 or even 24/7. Just like my study, it pleases me every time when I gain new knowledge. Hard work will be meaningless if you don’t love your job, and the work will always remain“hard”. Last but not least ,what’s really essential is not what you do, but it’s about fulfilling your personal value and making contributions to the society.
I’ve always had this unrealistic fantasy that I sit in an old wooden chair and write my own unrealistic novel with sunlight spilling unevenly in my palms. And I would never get bored by just having this vision. So to be 996 or not, it is not a question if you love what you do.
