“996”: Lost in the Corporate Culture
The “overtime culture”,which is called 996 work schedule, has became a hot topic on the Internet. And different people have different opinions. As far as I am concerned, I don’t think it should be adopted.
With the development of Chinese economy, the Internet companies have made great progress. It brings us much convenience; however, at the same time, the “overtime culture” also emerges as the times requires. Some leading Chinese Internet companies like Alibaba adopt this work system. They declare declare that the 996 work schedule meet the needs of society and it shows young people’s creativeness，ambition, enthusiasm and hard work. Many bosses thought it was good as it can inspire employees’ will to fight. Then they can make more profits. But they ignore the fact that it is illegal to adopt the scheme and encroaches on the rights of workers.
China Daily reviewed that the Labor Law clearly stipulates that the employing units can extend workers’ working hours, usually no more than one hour a day and no more than 36 hours a month.The overtime of 996 work system far exceeds this requirement.The Alibaba’s formal CEO said it should be banned，because they realized that it is unreasonable .Thinking back the history,the Pairs Commune helped the workers gain an 8-hour workday.But today,hundreds of years later will we go back to the old days?We shouldn’t deprive workers’ free time to relax themselves.So I agree that the overtime culture should be banned right now.
I think those who are forced to work in a pattern of 996 work schedule should use the law to protect their rights.A company may spend a lot of time when it starts.The boss and employees would like to spend more time for its development. We encourage them to work for a long time if they are willing.But,if the boss forces them to do that,the result may be opposite.As a saying goes,beyond is as wrong as falling short.The purpose of the development of society is to make a better life,not to work endlessly. Extra working hours may hurt us both mentally and physically. At the same time,this schedule does no good to the efficiency.For workers,keeping silent isn’t the best choice. They should speak their thoughts loudly in order to follow their hearts.
Apparently,I won’t take a job that requires such a work schedule though it offres a high salary.If I’m single,I’m supposed to have more time on self-development and take up a hobby to enrich my life.If not,I have the duty to bring my child up and accompany my family. Under the 996 work schedule,overdraft will occur. Staying up late for a long time leads to premature hair loss. Heavy work stress could lead to insomnia and Neurasthenia. How can I put up with the work if it takes up my whole time?I won’t.
Today Chinese GDP has developed 1000 dollars per person on average.Surely,we all hope to pursue a high quality life.We are human beings, not work machines. 996 work schedule may have its own reason,but I still don't think it should be applied to our work.Spend more time on some really meaningful things and enjoy our life.Only do we respect the real thoughts of staffs,we can maximize their motivation.
Remember that we are working for life rather than living for work.We shouldn’t get lost in the Corporate Culture.I think the 996 work schedule should also bring the government concern,perfect the laws and regulations,conscientiously guarantee civil rights.We all need a harmonious society!
